Mokihinui – Hemphill – Johnson Rivers

8 day loop in southern Kahurangi. Wild spring weather of snow, hail, sun, rain, wind! Kiwi calls, kaka and whole hillsides of flowering kowhai. Lovely!

I enjoyed the 1950’s era huts along the Mokihinui and was impressed by the massive gorge. Lets hope that Meridian energy dont dam up this precious wild river.

Just cuz you don’t see lots of comments, doesn’t mean others are not reading and enjoying your blog. Love reading your route descriptions and the few tantalizing pics. Getting psyched to go out and do some tramping!

Hi Tristan,

as you know your wish came through, 2012 now, the Mokihinui is now save from those restless money making giants, let’s say for a while at least till the next Mr greed is turning up. Forest and Bird did at least great in this case. I love to be back to the region soon as well as walking the Wangapeka again, and this time in full, that would be awesome. The Kowhai should be in full flower soon.

Happy tramping
