Wharariki Beach

Arched islands, wild coast, and freezing pounding surf makes Wharariki beach a must-see for every visitor to Golden Bay – and a favorite place for locals. Run down dunes and watch seal pups play. The beach is big, so swallows up visitors, hiding them in caves and secret tunnels.

Make sure you visit on a calm day – otherwise the westerly wind will blow you away in no time.

Be careful climbing the islands at low tide – you might get stuck, and every year people do! Tight dwarf flax and coastal turf cover exposed areas, and a band of scrub hides the lovely Puponga Farm Park behind. Follow the beach down to Green Hills, or north across Old Man range to Cape Farewell, the northernmost point of the south island.
