Northern Fiordland

Cascade – Red Hills – Big Bay – Harrison River
Traverse from Jackson Bay, up the Cascade river, across Red hill and along the coast to Big Bay. An easy stroll to Upper Kaipo Hut…. then the challenge of the Harrison River. Incredible views from mt Te hau across to Mt Pembroke and Lake Never-Never. Awesome.

Central Fiordland

Traverse from Manapouri to Milford Sound
19 day traverse of central Fiordland, from Manapouri powerhouse to Milford Sound. Fantastic weather, hardly any sandflies, heaps of wildlife, loads of deer trails and Moir’s Guide (1995 – the old edition) helped us to achieve our goal in 19 days instead of a planned 25. Thanks to Vern Thompson of Te Anau for our food drop.

Southern Fiordland

Tramping the Telegraph line to Puysegur Point
Puysegur Point at last! Thunder rolls, lightning strikes the ocean and waterfalls fly upward in the wind. Titi wheel out to sea as Tasman rollers pound the point. A dramatic arrival at one of New Zealand’s most remote spots. Matt and I carried on to the welcome shelter of the old landing shed at Otago Retreat to enjoy fresh rainwater after days of Fiordland tea.
