Atomic Physics Research Paper

You will at the due date (which is ………………….) present a “paper” on the subject of “Atomic Physics”.

The “paper” may be in the form of:

  • Oral presentation (a talk).
  • Illustrated oral presentation (a talk using posters projected pictures etc).
  • PowerPoint presentation.
  • Normal written paper.

No matter the form of presentation there must be some form permanent record (written, computer file etc) so that your teacher has a chance to mark your work in detail.

Marking Schedule:

Achieve

  • Include accurate descriptions of the following things:
    • Proton, Neutron ,Electron, Radioactivity, α particles, β particles, γ rays,
    • an atomic (nuclear) reactor or atomic (nuclear) bomb,
    • fission, fusion, half life, radioactive isotopes
    • a use of atomic (nuclear) radiation other than reactors or bombs. Examples of these include: Carbon dating, cancer treatment, gamma ray sterilizing.

Merit

  • accurate and full explanations of how an atomic (nuclear) reactor or atomic (nuclear) bomb works or how another use of atomic (nuclear) radiation works. Examples of these include: Carbon dating, cancer treatment, gamma ray sterilizing.
  • There must be a mention of the problems to do with radioactive waste and radiation.

Excellence

  • Discuss in depth the merits and problems associated with the use of atomic (nuclear) technology. To do this you may give an in depth discussion of the comparison between fission and fusion technology.

Lesson List

  • Radioactivity
  • Research Project
  • Two lessons in computer room - print out web pages.
  • Library books collected from library and used in class.
  • Three lessons preparing report.
  • Two lessons presenting report.
